about

More than ten years ago I met Frz whose contact had been given to me by Yann Jaffiol along with the comment: “I am sure you two will get along, you’ll see”. We’ve done more than getting along, we’ve listened to one another. Rapidly, we formed a duo, FrzImagho : two musicians, two guitars, two laptops to process the guitars’ signals and a hundred percent improvised music, no safety net, no rehearsal, no former discussion, no communication signs exchanged while playing, but mere sound, actions and reactions. The whole interaction mediated by nothing but mutual listening. So we’ve played for a few years, developing our own universe building on our common love for Microstoria and the late 90’s electronica. We’ve systematically recorded our improvisations, a lot of which are now lost, but we had documented our work on two demos. Today, the Tremens Archives is releasing “selected works”, composed of nine titles chosen from our second demo. Four of these titles had already been released by Burning Emptiness in 2011 on a split FrzImagho/Moon. I mean to salute the excellent mastering by Gilles Deles who has succeeded at imparting presence and depth to these few pieces.

FrzImagho stopped existing in 2005, date of our very last improvisation (which can be listened to on the album « duet » released last year also by Tremens Archives), but that’s no reason not to listen to that music : never have I had more pleasure improvising than with Frz. Free improvisation is a frustrating practice for it often happens that one is not very good at it, and, of course, it also happens in public. But at times when pieces were moving off the ground, when we were producing a music such as we had never even imagined, it felt as if sounds were played through us by a much better musician. This feeling of being the mere medium of a spontaneous musical expression is the closest I have ever come to the experience of ecstasy in music. Writing about our improvisation, I still can feel the almost physical sensation of being, at times, « ravished », « raised ».

That being said, have a good listening !
